It doesn't have a lot of gain and the clean channel is very sterile. I should also state the the JMP-1 is not the best sounding preamp. Check out their website at My brother and I both have one and they sound better than most 4x12s and are cheaper. My suggestion for a cabinet would be an earcandy buzzbomb 2x12 or Sovereign 1x12. These power amps should sound better than what you have because I'd be willing to bet your issue is more cabinet related in the Mesa and more speaker related in the Peavey. Alexi Laiho used a Lee Jackson Perfect Connection preamp (hot rodded JCM800 essentially) with a Peavey 60/60 for a long time. The closest sound I can think of would be Children of Bodom. Pairing 6L6's with a JMP-1 will sound more like an Engl or a 5150. Billy Corgan on the Adore tour and the majority of Machina II used a Voodoo Amps modded JMP-1 into the low input of a Guitar Center reissue JCM800 with KT88s in the poweramp. Dave Mustaine's power amp of choice had KT88s in it (a VHT 2150 in fact) up until Cryptic Writings when he started using the Marshall stuff.

The Zakk Wylde sound is 6550s/KT88s in a Marshall.

You can use a E元4/6CA7 power amp if you want to have that classic marshall sound (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen - NOT VAN HAGAR - ) or if you want something a bit more modern. As far as the best sound there are two choices to have a rack that will still sound marshall like. If you can swing the cash a VHT power amp is the best you can get with the new Randall and the older Mesa/Boogie stuff closely following.
